Black Balsam Knob is a 6,214-foot mountain located in the Blue Ridge Mountains. We climbed this mountain in early August, and it is easily one of the best hikes we've done in a while. If you're thinking about hiking this trail, we have a few tips that are good before climbing. To start, we recommend arriving before 9AM to start your hike, especially on the weekend. Black Balsam Knob is a very popular hike, so arriving early can help beat the crowds that form further in the day. Next, the Art Loeb trail is the easiest way to climb Black Balsam. Other than some sections that get fairly muddy, the trail is relatively easy with no major challenges along the way.

Once you reach about halfway up the mountain, you will get to the first overlook. While it isn't the peak, it is still a very good place to get pictures of the surrounding area. After the overlook, you will begin hiking up the final section of Black Balsam Knob. While it isn't muddy, it is fairly rocky and steep, so prepare for a brief climb. After you've climbed up the final section, you will be at the peak. From there, you will be able to see some amazing views of the area from the peak of the mountain. Since Black Balsam Knob has no trees at the top, you'll be able to get 360° views once you've completed the hike. Anyways, Black Balsam Knob is a great hike if you're looking for a rewarding climb that isn't too challenging. We got some great pictures that we'll think you'll love down below.
